Accounting ScholarshipFederal Appliance Rebate Program

January 14, 2010
Payne, Nickles & Company

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided funding to create jobs and stimulate the economy by supporting investments in energy-related programs. The act provided funding on a per state/territory basis to reimburse consumers on their purchase of ENERGY STAR qualified appliances.

Each state/territory has its own funding amount, start date, rules for obtaining rebates, and program beginning date. The rebate amounts available are on a first come first serve basis and will expire when the state’s/territory’s allotment of funds is used up.

Ohio is implementing a mail-in rebate program and has $11,020,000 available. The state expects to replace 89,000 inefficient appliances. The program is scheduled to begin in March 2010 and will end when funds are depleted.

The following products are eligible for the rebate program:
  • Refrigerators
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Gas storage water heaters
  • Electric heat pump water heaters
Ohio residents must provide proof that they have properly disposed of their old appliances. More information will become available in the coming months including a list of participating retailers and appliance recyclers. If you have any questions, please contact us at cpas@pncpa.biz.
